We lost a creative giant far too soon.
Midsommar, 2019
So Fantastic.
Beautiful Boy, 2018
I never wrote about this when I should have. Like so many things in life. But this movie was with me everyday for, like 6 months, it was such a beautiful story and so well acted by its principals, not just Timothy Chalamet but Steve Carell and Maura Tierney. Fantastically honest story of addiction, love, dishonesty, disease, etc. etc.
I thought about it today and this still sums it up.
GREAT KIDS

The Founder, 2016
This movie blew my mind. It captures the transition from the utopian ideals of 20th century American Capitalism to the inevitable extreme of the ideology. The McDonald's brothers represent the entrepreneurial spirit to compete by applying genius to create a better product and experience for their customers. Ray Kroc represents the unquenchable thirst to maximize every aspect of an idea and push the profit motive to the absolute limit. The pure idea wasn't his.
more.
the drive for more has consequences that cannot be reversed.
When you want it ALL, you TAKE. You leave a wake of destruction. Something is lost. I think the ideology itself is a casualty. The spirit of capitalism dies. It is cannibalized by itself leaving a new monster behind that humanity thinks it recognizes but it doesn't. Madeline Albright has said recently, "If you pluck a chicken one feather at a time, it doesn't know its bare." that seems apt here.
Black Panther
Home Run.
Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond
Leigh and I watched this the other night. I heard James Franco talk about how compelling it was on WTF with Marc Maron the other day. Which was a great conversation as well. Jim Carrey completely engulfs himself in Andy Kaufman and furthermore into Kaufman's alter ego, Tony Clifton. It is wheels operating inside wheels operating inside wheels. But the real gem of this documentary is the current state of mind of Jim Carrey. He seems completely enlightened. Like his life is now an open door into an elevated realm. One that is free of so much of the minutiae that keeps people tied down. I forget how talented Jim Carrey is - he feels like an individual who has turned into a caricature on a hollywood cartoon drawing of establishment personalities of a certain generation. Imagine what a trifecta of opening films like Ace Ventura-The Mask-Dumb and Dumber would do to you as a human being just trying to live up to your father. Wild. Really Inspiring - Stay woke, Jim.
Lupita Nyong'o's Op-Ed in the New York Times
A beautifully written comprehensive nail-in-the coffin on Weinstein and the systemic abuse of power in Hollywood. When she writes about her experience in his home in Westport, I think of the genius of Jordan Peele's - 'Get Out'
The Defiant Ones, 2017
Just Fucking Awesome. So Inspiring.
THE WITCH
My brother-in-law told us about this one. Never heard of it. Sometimes horror movies trailers or posters just wash over me as "all the same." maybe that happened with this - i don't know. Either way this movie has powerful, beautiful imagery. each scene seems very considered. Really cool expression of the theme of trust. Sometimes things that you think are misunderstands are not. Maybe you are who you are.
OJ : MADE IN AMERICA
A very compelling, comprehensive and fantastic documentary.
